Estonia is a state in the Baltic region of Northern Europe. It is bordered to the north by the Gulf of Finland, to the west by the Baltic Sea, to the south by Latvia, and to the east by Lake Peipus and Russia. Estonia is a Baltic gem offering visitors the chance to see an ex-Soviet occupied country that is now part of the European Union. Traces of the Soviet era are still there to be seen, for example the Paldiski, a deserted Soviet army base. There is no doubt that Tallinn is the biggest centre for tourists in Estonia. The historic Old Town with its numerous sights is one of the most impressive medieval monuments in Europe. Glorious beaches pepper the extensive coastline, although the swimming season is short; summers in Estonia are short and the winters are severe.
